This exhibition is introspective and encyclopaedic in its nature - it brings together Holden's sculpture, music, films, paintings, posters and performances for the first time to explore some recurring themes in his work, such as memory, duration, and our attachment to objects.
Andy Holden works with plaster, bronze, ceramics, found objects and images, household paint and printmaking, sound and performance; he has created monumental outdoor sculptures, affordable multiples and complex, poetic events. He makes the plinths and cases that display his work, and the posters that promote and document his performances. He composes music and has his own band, 'The Grubby Mitts'. Each activity informs other aspects of his work in a cumulative way. His work is complex, experimental, and attentive to a wide web of cultural references.
This is the first major exhibition of Andy Holden's work in the UK. Holden is a young British artist who first came to public attention with his 'Pyramid Piece' in Art Now at Tate Britain in 2010.
A new publication, structured around a conversation with Dan Cox and including contributions by Juan Cruz, Lizzie Fisher, Darian Leader, Joe Saunders, Aimée Selby, Jon K. Shaw and Tyler Woolcott, will accompany this exhibition.
